The annual diet of all spiders in the world has been calculated by scientists
Specialists from the Universities of Basel and Lund calculated the amount of food eaten by all the Earth's spiders during the year. The scientific work was published by The Science of Nature.
There are 45 thousand species of these arthropods on our planet. The density of the spider population is 1000 individuals per square meter and their total weight is 25 million tons. As a result of the study, it was found that this huge community eats 800 million tons of extraction annually.
For comparison scientists have named the quantity of meat and fish which people consume for the same period. The figure is half as small and equals 400 million tons.
When
collecting statistics, the nutritional characteristics of different species of
spiders were taken into account: inhabitants of forests and meadows are more
gluttonous than their desert congeners.
